Hyperpigmentation (uneven skin tone) is when your skin color is darker than normal. It happens when you have more melanin, substance in the body that is responsible for your skin color (pigment). Acne and other skin disorders can cause hyperpigmentation. Picking your skin and the use of improper skin care products can also cause hyperpigmentation. Another major cause is exposure to sunlight, which will darken areas of your skin that are already hyperpigmented.
